Does your hair care regime include oiling your hair and scalp? Some people believe that oiling the hair is unnecessary as our scalp has glands which produce sebum, the oily secretion that keeps the skin hydrated and forms a protective layer on each strand of hair.
But regular washing of hair and exposure to dust and wind peel the skin and hair of their natural protective layer of oil causing the hair to turn frizzy and the scalp becoming dry, flaky and itchy. To overcome these problems we apply oils to the hair to keep them healthy. Frequent oil massages pampers your scalp and keep the hair lustrous, unless you have oversensitive skin or other skin issues.
Hair loss can also occur if hair roots get dry due to lack of nourished oil. A person can become bald if hair loss is in excess, in this case hair transplantation is the only solution to overcome baldness. India is a medical tourism destination, offers best and affordable hair transplant in Pune, Delhi, Ahemdabd, Bangalore and Mumbai.
Essential oils are extracts of plant that have medicinal properties. Different essential oils are used to treat different hair problems such as hair loss, dandruff and premature graying. Massaging the essential oils improves the circulation of blood in the scalp and encourages hair growth by restoring the hair follicles.
As all the essential oils are highly concentrated and very powerful, they should not be used directly on the scalp. Only a few drops must be mixed with suitable carrier oil such as jojoba oil or coconut oil. If you have a scalp condition that prevents oiling your hair then you can dilute the essential oils with vinegar, floral water or alcohol.
Different essential oils have different properties and you should use them depending on the nature of your scalp and hair. Listed below are some of the essential oils that will help you gain gorgeous hair.
Lemon essential oil
The citrus flavored lemon oil is obtained from the oil glands on the lemon rinds. It is ideal for the oily scalp as it is a clarifying and drying oil. Lemon oil is useful if you have scalp acne or dandruff along with oily hair. As the oil is antiseptic and antimicrobial, it helps to clear up the secondary infections that usually complicate acne and dandruff.
Mix around 5-6 drops of lemon oil with 2 tablespoons of jojoba oil and massage the scalp with it. Rinse it off with herbal shampoo after a couple of hours. This helps you fight dandruff and an oily scalp.
For removing the excess oil from the hair, rinse your hair with lemon oil mixed in warm water after shampooing your hair. Wash your hair again with plain water.
Peppermint essential oil
This oil has a cooling effect and when applied to the skin, it improves the flow of blood in that area. This helps to revive the hair follicles and encourage hair growth. Its cleansing properties make it a perfect oil for dry scalp as it open ups the clogged pores and restores normal flow of skin oils. It also helps control dandruff.
In two tablespoons of coconut oil mix 5 drops each of lavender oil and peppermint oil. Apply this mixture to your scalp and leave it for 15 to 20 minutes before washing it off with shampoo.
Even though peppermint oil is cooling, it can cause skin irritation to people who are allergic to plants belonging to the mint family. It’s better to test it on a small area of the skin before using it on the scalp.
Patchouli essential oil
This oil is procured from the leaves and flowers of Pogostemon cablin plant which falls in the mint family. Its strong musky smell can be quite unbearable if used in excess.
Many Asian countries since olden times used patchouli leaves for skin and hair care. It is very beneficial for treating various skin and hair issues due to its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. People affected with dermatitis, eczema and dandruff can benefit from this oil as these problems are generally the underlying causes of hair loss.
Mix 5-6 drops of rosemary oil and 2-3 drops of patchouli oil in 2 tablespoons of argan oil which enhance the anti-dandruff and anti-acne action of the patchouli oil. Leave it for 2 hours after massaging the scalp with this mixture. Use shampoo to wash it off. You can also use lavender or lemon oil rinse if you want to conceal the smell of patchouli.
Vetiver essential oil
Vetiver oil is extracted from the aromatic roots of a grass known as Chrysopogon zizanioides. This sweet smelling oil has a cooling effect. It aids in minimizing hair loss which is caused due to the excessive heat in the body. High stress level may results in premature graying and baldness. The soothing effect of this oil cools the mind and reduces stress. Vetiver oil is an excellent antioxidant, preventing the hair follicles from aging due to the free radicals.
Mix together 2 tablespoons of warm almond oil and 5-6 drops of vetiver oil and massage the scalp with it. You can leave it overnight or wash it off after 2 hours.
