Keep Those Gums Pink! 5 Healthy Tips to Keep Your Gums Healthy

Gum disease is the result of bacterial plaque buildup. In addition, it is an inflammatory disease that affects the majority of Americans over the age of 35. To keep your gums looking healthy, it is important to take certain measures.

Visit Your Dentist
According to the Coquitlam Centre Dental Clinic, if left untreated, unhealthy gums can lead to tooth decay and loss of teeth. Common symptoms of gum disease include swollen, bleeding gums, shiny and receding gums. Other symptoms include plaque between the teeth, persistent bad breath, pain when chewing and loose or sensitive teeth.
To avoid gum disease, see a dentist every six months for a thorough cleaning to remove the buildup of plaque.
Floss Teeth Regularly
One way to maintain healthy gums is to clean your teeth on a regular basis. It is best to brush twice a day and floss at least once a day.
Flossing helps remove food particles and plaque between the teeth. To floss properly, hold the dental floss tightly between your thumbs and forefingers and gently guide it between your teeth.
Many health experts recommend flossing before you brush your teeth.
Brush Teeth Regularly
After flossing, you should brush your teeth for about two minutes with short strokes. Do not scrub your teeth or gums with the brush and do not apply too much pressure. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste that contains fluoride.
For best results, brush your teeth in the morning and before going to bed. Also, it is important to replace your toothbrush when the bristles become worn. Typically, a toothbrush needs replacing every three to four months.
Massage Your Gums
In addition to flossing and brushing, massaging your gums is helpful to maintaining healthy gums. Massaging the gums increases blood circulation and helps reduce redness and puffiness.
With clean fingertips, gently massage the outside and inside of your gums at least once a day. If you prefer, you can use essential oils such a peppermint and wintergreen. They have antiseptic properties that help increase blood flow.
Eat Healthy Foods
You should incorporate calcium enriched foods in your diet to maintain and improve the health of your gums. Calcium strengthens the gums, which will lead to less tooth loss. Some foods rich in calcium include yogurt, cheese and milk.
Fresh fruits, green leafy vegetables, whole grains, fish, salmon, tuna and nuts should also be eaten. These foods are packed with powerful antioxidants such as the vitamins C, E and D that will help fight bacteria.
To keep your gums looking healthy, visit your dentist on a regular basis, eat foods enriched with vitamins and brush and floss your teeth daily.
